Meet Rachel Butts

Rachel, our first installment in our ASA session, deems her personal style as easy and relaxed.

Where do you find inspiration for your style: Being in a sorority, my biggest inspiration comes from my friend’s closets.

Style Icons: I don’t know that I necessarily have an ‘icon’; I just like what I like.

Does being in a sorority influence your personal style: I think being in a sorority makes you more aware of your own personal style. In an organization of 200 girls, you have to be in touch with what makes you, you. Experimenting with different styles and taking risks is what being surrounded by girls is all about. I am always changing what I like, and it doesn’t break the bank because I have 200 closets to look through. Being in a sorority is like having your own personal mall to shop at!

How would you describe ASA's style: What I like best about ASA is that we really don’t have one style to describe us all. ‘Individually unique, together complete’. We range from cowboy boots to high-waisted jeans to bohemian.

Favorite places to shop: TJMaxx is my kryptonite. It is so hard to walk in there and not leave with 10 things. I am also big into online shopping since being at JMU—tobi, xenia, and shopow are a college girl’s best friend.

Dream vacation: I have been dying to go to South Africa—especially Capetown.

Coffee or tea: Coffee, without a doubt.

Is there a trend you wouldn’t try: I would never be caught dead in a Lilly Pulitzer dress, just NO.

Song that never gets old: My friends and I go absolutely berserk whenever we hear “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston. It will forever be our girl anthem and remind me of the best memories I have had at JMU

Why is personal style important to you: I think the transition from high school to college is hard. Many people feel like they become a face in the crowd. It is important to get that standout feeling back— by expressing who you are through what you wear. It is what makes you unique and beautiful!
