Meet Scottie Smith
Scottie Smith is in a word, fantastic. She is thoughtful, gathers inspiration for her style from unlikely places, and doesn't give a damn about what anyone else thinks. When asked about her personal style in one word, Scottie was ambivalent: "My first thought is comfortable. But then, I’m thinking confident. Now, I’m thinking cute. Actually, it’s comfortable."
As stated above, Scottie is a Math major, something that I deeply respect (based on the sole fact that I barely passed Elementary Statistics). As far as inspiration is concerned, "a lot of it is just math. I love seeing patterns in things. Whether it’s patterns in shapes or patterns in colors. I sort of see the world that way. I see things creatively and analytically at the same time."
Scottie's style icons are a little different from most as well. "Zooey Deschanel—love my girl Zooey. My little sister is in middle school and she is also a style icon." She laughs. "Math teachers also dress kind of funny. They wear plaid on plaid with striped knee-socks. I just appreciate how they don’t care and they clearly wear what they like. My friends tell me I dress like a math teacher. I’m not sure that they mean it in a good way."
Personal style is deeply important to Scottie for reasons more than just looking good. "I used to put a lot of stock into how I look and I dressed. So, freshman year, I stopped wearing makeup and tried to be confident without all of that. While that was a good foundation, I want to acess my confidence even easier. It helps me start the day as the best part of myself but it’s not something that I need. I can just do it for fun."
Scottie is also a Student Ambassador. Her go to tour outfit is spunky and cute in only a way that Scottie can pull off. "I like to wear the old polos that are less golf shirt looking. When it’s cold, I just bundle up in pants. I like wearing my purple keds with yellow shoelaces and fun socks. I try and go all out with the accessories and hair bows. I think that my voice is kind of high pitched so I try and win them over with my clothes."
Fun Facts:
Dream vacation: I’d love to go to Cape Town or New Zealand. But that’s the flavor of the week. I want to go everywhere.
Trend she wouldn't try: If I can’t wear it in front of my dad, I probably wouldn’t try it.
Daily makeup routine: I’m usually running late but I like to wear mascara. If I’m trying, I’ll try and channel Zooey.
Feels most comfortable in: Tights. I don’t like pants.
Favorite stores to shop at: My friends make fun of me but Old Navy. I fit in everything I've owned since 8th grade so I have a lot to work with. I guess I’ve grown out of my Abercrombie phase.
